Comes in a PCGS holder, one of the two great graders of numismatic coins. If PCGS says, "It's Easter", go home and dye your eggs.OK, how's the new pictures? <---- This was a request. Now, do you know where to send the money?
This is one of the most amazing coins to cross my eyes in over 60 years of coin collecting. Facts and numbers are about as boring as something can get. Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. So before I tell you all about this coin let's talk 'VALUE'.
There are literally thousands of gold pieces in this year and we could even include grade. BUT, when the buying dealer points out the facts of this coin he will convince you that you paid too much or other reasons why this coin is only worth $X,XXX.XX. So, when the day comes to sell this what you won't hear from
ANYONE
is the fact this is the ONLY one of a kind. Many will tell you stories about value and evaluation, but when you're buying, this fact is a well beaten drum and TRUE. This is a one of a kind coin. Like the nickel a bit ago which went for 7 figures. I don't care how you slice it. If you have a 'TOP POP, AND A FINEST KNOWN you've found the pinnacle of coins. Oh, there are many. Any year has a top pop, any 70 is a top pop and you can have thousands of top pops of one coin. But...BUT, when you truly have the ONLY ONE of it's kind remember, the value becomes totally arbitrary. This coin actually fits in no slot but will be found in auctions, personal notes, perhaps edtorials and so on and so forth...
BUT NONE WILL BE SEEN NESTLING IN THIS BOX WITH A ERROR DESIGNATION '45/'46 BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONLY ONE. It's exactly what we strive for, finding the one of a kind item which is also desired by 'king and queens' of the coin world. Oh, sure there are many others but not of this year make and model so to speak.. And one more thing; take away the pretty box and fancy words and signatures, [of which all have a value] and the pinch, you still have sitting there, the coin which is the star of all the fluff. You still wind up with a finest known coin with a great history, and ONLY you can have one. No one else on the planet can but you. OH, BTW, need a great tax write off, ask about donating it someday to the Smithsonian for a big fat tax deduction. So if you go away to a better place, the family, who may not be a collector, can donate it to a charity. I suggest the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
Questions? They are gold too, have at it. Read on, enjoy.
With the COA signed by David Hall, founder of PCGS (this in itself is a deep rarity, I have never seen his signature on a coin situation)
As the COA (Certificate of authenticity) says:
The S.S. Central America, known as the "SHIP OF GOLD", operated during the 1850's
transporting
newly mined treasures from the eastern end of the Panama Railroad up to New York. She
reliably did this twice a month until the largest hurricane of the 19th century struck on September 11th, 1857, sending 425 souls to the ocean floor the next day, September 12th, 1857, along with millions of dollars in fabulous gold ingots, gold and silver coins and raw gold ore. The sinking and loss of the cargo was so important to the financial market, that the event led to the great financial panic of 1857.
NOW, over 160 years later, you can be holding one of the 3,154 gold coins recovered in 2014 from the S.S. Central America. This treasure was personally curated by BOB EVANS, and authenticated and encapuslated by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), the official grading service of the S. S. Central America.

This treasure comes to you in a specially crafted display case from which viewing will be an astonishing pleasure for many years to come.
Likely, this will appreciate nicely as time goes by and the treasures from the S.S. Central America finds their ways into collections and are not found often on the market.
BUT... getting to the specifics of this coin is even more fun.
1) It's a POP ONE (simply means there are none better) This coin is the perfect representation of the treasures of yore.
1a) More important for sure, not only is it a 'Top Pop' which means there are none better BUT it is also a
"FINEST KNOWN'. Finest known means you have the ONLY one there is in the world. ANYWHERE! And for this one there won't be another found and matching it because all the ships coins have been curated.
To be clear here, Finest Known is the Holy Grail of collecting. All forms of collecting, porcelain, coins, paper money, artwork and so on and so forth. To own a 'finest known' of anything is not within the reach of most people as there just isn't enough of all the 'finest knowns' of all the collectibles. To own one..... Wow. And with this done with a designer holder, display case from the finest artists is something to behold. It will be hard not to place this in view except for it's extreme value, perhaps shouldn't be left out on a coffee table when you aren't around.
2) Included is actual gold dust from the S.S. Central America. You get a 'pinch'. Neato huh?
3) Signed by the Chief Scientist Bob Evans to certify the coin and the gold dust is from the S.S. Central America and...
4) The COA is signed by the founder of PCGS, DAVID HALL.
5)
It is an error coin as the date was mis-struck and so noted on the holder by PCGS. One can see this error by tilting the coin in decent light and the 5 and 6 are clearly noticed on the top of the 6, which is the 'overstrike'. Why this happened is your guess. Must have been near the end of the run for the 1845 and start of the 1846.
6) It's a New Orleans Mint, which is always
desirable
by collectors as that mint seems to put out fewer items.
7) It comes to you in a beautiful display case with velvet touch outside and properly formed nest for the coin case itself.
This will be the FLAGSHIP of your collection as for shipwreck and low population coins are hot items right now.
Do the numbers. How many collectors are there, hundreds of thousands, millions? How many of these are there? Hmmm, only one? Not quite enough to go around. This is the
epitome
of collecting. It just doesn't get much better. This is
truly
on the top page.
