Coin History
1862 LIBERTY HEAD
The very first proof Liberty Double Eagles struck are pattern or experimental pieces dated 1849. Only a single specimen survives, and it resides in the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution. The regular-issue proof Double Eagle series seems to have commenced in 1850 with the delivery of perhaps just one or two examples for presentation purposes. One of these coins is reported to have survived, although it is part of the Paris Mint Collection and unavailable for private ownership. We do not know whether the Mint struck any proof Type I Twenties from 1851 through 1857, but no examples have surfaced as of June, 2007.
Beginning in 1858, Mint officials made a concerted effort to market proof coinage to collectors. Indeed, that year saw the first sizeable delivery of proof Double Eagles of the Type I design, although today only three or four peices have survived. Production increased substantially in 1859, the Mint also recording the mintage figure for the first time that year. Even so, the 1859 is exceedingly rare in proof format because many of the 80 coins struck appear to have been melted as unsold. The same can be said for the remaining six issues in the proof Type I Double Eagle series, although a buyer with enough patience and sufficient financial resources should be able to procure an 1864 for type or investment purposes.
There are two exceptional branch mint proofs known of the Type I Liberty Double Eagle design. The unique 1854-S is impounded in the Smithsonian Institution, and it was undoubtedly sent to the Mint Cabinet by Superintendent Lewis A. Birdsall in honor of the commencement of coinage operations at the San Francisco Mint. The 1856-O is also unique, but the coin remains in private hands after having been owned by the family of New Orleans Mint Superintendent Charles Bienvenu for many years. The writer had the pleasure of examining this special Double Eagle when it appeared at auction in January of 2002.
