    According to John Dryfhout, while still in school in Paris, Augustus Saint-Gaudens: ' ... formalized his conception of ideal beauty, relying significantly on French and Italian Renaissance art. He was especially impressed by the vitality of restrained emotion, strength with style, and elegance of expression.' This vitality, strength, and elegance is especially evident in his design for the High Relief double eagle of 1907. This coin shows those design elements in the three-dimensional appearance of idealized beauty seen on the striding figure of Liberty. This particular coin displays bright surfaces overall with just a touch of friction over the high points and there are no obvious or detracting marks.
